SEVEN CHURCHES OF THE REVELATION
In what was once known as Asia Minor and is now part of Western Turkey, lies a wealth of Christian and Roman history, not least of which are the sites of the seven churches featured in Chapters 2 and 3 of the Book of Revelation. The sites of these churches, to whom the Lord Jesus (through John) addressed individual letters, are located in a circuit that allows you to comfortably visit all of them on a tour that takes from seven to ten days (depending on the depth of discovery you want to put into the tour).
Flying into Izmir (modern day Smyrna), the coach would take us in a clockwise direction through Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, Ephesus (one of the jewels of Turkish archaeology) and back to Smyrna. The route of this tour also takes in the Roman hot springs of Heirapolis with its famous travertines, the beautiful ruins of Aphrodisias and, with only a small detour, the ruins of the fabled city of Troy.
I have had the privilege of organising four tours of this region and of leading three of them. Having seen how the Book of Revelation came alive to folk on the tour, I am convinced that it should feature high on the bucket list of Christian pilgrims.
